I didn’t expect to it to be cheap. I knew that filling up my new car would be an expensive exercise, but something about spending over $100 to fill up the tank of petrol didn’t seem right. Knowing that it would last for less than a month makes it worse.
People always talk about the cost of filling up their cars these days. I never really thought about it too much until now. My old car had a fortnightly refill of $40, this was in dollars, not litres, that was the main difference. As the fuel price went up, I would get less and less fuel for money, but it wasn’t noticeable. Sure I had to fill up a few days earlier than I used to, but it wasn’t hitting me in the pocket. At least it wasn’t apparent.
Its a different story with my new car. I need petrol with 95 octane or higher, which unfortunately isn’t as widely available as one might hope. As matter of convenience I decided to always fill up my tank when I come across a service station that has the fuel I need. And this was my problem, now the litres is a constant, and I’m really starting to see the actual cost of the fuel.
Spending over $100 a month on petrol seems very excessive. I only drive for about 40Km each day, and that’s usually only on weekdays. And for this ‘luxury’ of owning a car I’m spending almost as much money as my broadband connection and satellite TV subscription combined!.
For some reason I’m just left with a feeling of bring ripped off. Artificially inflated oil prices and an apparent lack of any real drive to find alternate fuels can be very annoying to say the least. Maybe someday the air car will take the world by storm. Until then all we can do is keep an eye on the oil prices, hoping it won’t hit the magical $2 a litre mark any time soon.
